Alleged Sex Abuser
Larry Kean
Larry Kean (deceased) was a Music Teacher (woodwind) at Xavier and Burke Hall from 3rd term 1969 to at least 1974 (waiting on later records). At the same time he was teaching at Camberwell Grammar School, 1968 to 1980
He sexually assaulted a boy on multiple occasions while giving clarinet lessons.
This ex-student has received a compensation settlement from the Society of Jesus and has also reported Larry Kean to the Royal Commission and the SANO taskforce (Vic).
The ex-student says: The school told my lawyers that they had no other record of sexual abuse by Larry Kean and this was used as an argument by the lawyers for the Jesuits (Minter Ellison) for a lesser amount of compensation.
( No other record? I wonder.... There is never only one victim....)
Another reporter says:
"Larry Kean, a music teacher on your list, was employed by John Mallinson, music director at Camberwell Grammar. Mallinson is the church organist who testified in favour of Pell. Kean continued to assault children at Camberwell Grammar, Mallinson knew."
Mallinson was also Organist of St Patrick's Cathedral from 1976 for 24 years, and gave testimony supporting George Pell at Pell's trial. John Mallinson biography
Camberwell Grammar says: "Mr Larry Kean worked at Camberwell Grammar School from 1968 to 1980 as a peripatetic music teacher.
Mr John Mallinson has informed the School that he knows nothing of the allegations raised in your email and that no concerns were ever raised with him.
In addition, the School is not aware of any complaint having been made against Larry Kean."
Like Willi Kovac, Brian O'Reilly and Glen Walls, he had no problem finding employment in other schools. How is that possible?
(Very curiously Kean replaced H. “Bill” James in 3rd term 1969.
H. “Bill” James very close to known sex abuser Father Ron Pickering at Gardenvale Parish, Melbourne. and is suspected of being involved in abuse with Pickering. Someone burned down the Gardenvale church.
Did James and Kean know each other?
Did James recommend Kean for his job?)
Meanwhile, Paul Ryan became a close friend of prominent priest of the Melbourne archdiocese, Father Ronald Dennis Pickering , who had already been a priest for 20 years. Ronald Pickering had contacts in the Catholic hierarchy.
For example, Pickering knew the new Bishop of Ballarat, Bishop Ronald Mulkearns . Pickering and Mulkearns had both studied for the priesthood at the Melbourne seminary in the early 1950s. Pickering became Ryan’s main mentor and career adviser for the next 20 years.
